How does quercetin help with allergies?
Quercetin is a natural flavonoid that inhibits histamine release from mast cells and basophils. It is not an antihistamine drug but a mast cell stabiliser: it prevents degranulation rather than blocking already-released histamine. Additionally: it suppresses pro-inflammatory cytokines (IL-4, IL-13) responsible for the Th2 response in atopy. For maximum effect, a stable blood level is needed — intake 2–3 times per day.
What is bromelain's role in the anti-allergy programme?
Bromelain enhances quercetin bioavailability (combined intake increases quercetin absorption by up to 20%). Bromelain itself suppresses prostaglandin and bradykinin synthesis involved in the inflammatory cascade during allergic reactions. It also thins nasal secretions in rhinitis — easing breathing.
Which types of allergy does the NSP programme help with?
Greatest effectiveness with: seasonal allergy (pollinosis/hay fever) — started 2–4 weeks before the pollen season. Food hypersensitivity (non-IgE-mediated) — reducing intestinal inflammation. Dust and pet allergy — reducing reactivity. Atopic dermatitis — supportive therapy. NOT effective: for anaphylaxis (requires adrenaline + antihistamines), severe IgE allergies — only alongside a physician.
When should the programme be started for seasonal allergy?
Key principle: start 4–6 weeks before the flowering season (for Ukraine: hazel — February-March; birch — April; grasses — May-June; ragweed — August-September). Quercetin requires time to accumulate in tissues and stabilise mast cells. Taking it during peak season reduces symptoms but does not eliminate them — prevention is key.
Does the NSP programme replace antihistamine drugs?
NO. Acute allergic reactions (urticaria, angioedema, anaphylaxis) require antihistamines or adrenaline — not supplements. The NSP programme is a supportive preventive therapy for reducing overall reactivity. Some individuals on stable quercetin report reduced antihistamine need — but any therapy change should only be made with a physician.
