Description
Protease Plus NSP — Proteolytic Enzyme Complex for Digestion and Immunity
Protease Plus (SKU 1841) is NSP’s unique formula containing a powerful blend of plant-sourced proteolytic (protein-digesting) enzymes. Unlike standard digestive enzymes, Protease Plus is designed to work not only in the stomach but also in the intestines and — when taken on an empty stomach — systemically in the bloodstream.
Enzyme Profile
- Protease I and II — break down proteins to amino acids
- Bromelain (from pineapple) — active across wide pH range, anti-inflammatory
- Papain (from papaya) — supports digestion of insoluble proteins
- Peptidase — complements proteases at the peptide level
Research
- Maurer (PMID: 11570252): Bromelain has anti-inflammatory and immunomodulatory properties
- Aggarwal et al. (PMID: 19388152): Systemic enzyme therapy may support reduction of inflammatory markers
Benefits
- Complete protein digestion — reduces bloating and heaviness after protein meals
- Immune support — may help degrade circulating immune complexes
- Anti-inflammatory — bromelain and papain support soft tissue recovery
Suggested Use
For digestion: 1–2 capsules before protein-rich meals. For systemic enzyme therapy: 2–3 capsules 30–45 min before meals on empty stomach.
Consultant’s Comment
NSP Protease Plus is a concentrated proteolytic enzyme complex. Taken with meals, the enzymes support protein digestion and may ease post-meal discomfort from high-protein foods. Taken between meals (on an empty stomach) the same enzymes absorb into the bloodstream and can exert a systemic anti-inflammatory effect — supported by research on serrapeptase and bromelain.
I recommend keeping this product on hand for both digestive and systemic use. Recommended with: NSP Lactobifidus and a broad enzyme complex for comprehensive digestive support.

What are proteolytic enzymes and how do they help?
Proteolytic enzymes (proteases) break down protein molecules into amino acids. With meals they support digestion of meat, legumes and other protein foods. Taken on an empty stomach they absorb into the bloodstream and may support management of systemic inflammation and fibrin breakdown.
What enzymes are in Protease Plus?
NSP Protease Plus contains a concentrated blend of proteolytic enzymes including protease, papain (from papaya), bromelain (from pineapple) and others. The full ingredient list is on the product packaging.
Should Protease Plus be taken with food or on an empty stomach?
It depends on the goal. For digestive support: take immediately before or during a meal. For systemic effect (inflammation management, exercise recovery): take on an empty stomach 30 minutes before or 2 hours after a meal.
Is there scientific research on systemic enzyme therapy?
Yes. Clinical studies on serrapeptase and bromelain show their ability to support normal inflammatory marker levels when taken systemically. Research includes applications in sports injuries and post-surgical recovery.
Is Protease Plus suitable for people with lactose or gluten intolerance?
Proteolytic enzymes do not help with lactose intolerance (that requires lactase). If you have coeliac disease or gluten sensitivity, check the product label to ensure absence of cross-contamination.
Can Protease Plus be combined with antibiotics or anticoagulants?
Proteolytic enzymes may interact with anticoagulants (blood thinners), potentially enhancing their effect. Consult your doctor before use if taking warfarin or aspirin.
Is Protease Plus suitable for athletes?
Yes. Bromelain and other proteases have been studied for accelerating recovery after exercise and reducing DOMS (delayed onset muscle soreness). Taking post-workout or between meals may support muscle microtrauma recovery.
